The Design for All Group

Research Projects

Research projects of group members (past and present) include the following:

Journey Enabling Information Systems for the Elderly and Disabled
Several members of the group are involved in a pilot project to explore the gap between information provided and that the disabled and elderly believe would make a difference in helping them be mobile.

A Systematic Basis for Developing Cognitive Assessment Methods for Assistive Technology
Ray Adams is collaborating with the University of Cambridge to develop ways to assess the acquired cognitive impairment of people in a way that allows appropriate assistive technology to be provided. A conceptual model and systematic method have been developed and test elements proposed and validated.

Multimedia Systems for the Hard of Hearing
Carl Reynolds' PhD research is looking at how the perceived sound quality of multimedia systems can be improved. One application of this work is in improving sound quality for the hard of hearing.

Sound Icons
Gill Whitney is involved in the standardisation process for sound icons.

Multimodalty Evaluation of a Robot for the Disabled
As a case study for her PhD research on the evaluation of multimodal interactive systems, Jo Hyde evaluated a Robotic system designed to provide help for severely disabled people.
Design and Evaluation of User-centred Digital Libraries
This project funded by EPSRC and led by Yin Leng Theng investigated fundamental design and usability issues underlying digital libraries. It is specifically concerned with the design of Digital Libraries aimed at children.
