User modelling and Adaptive Hypertext
The principal goal of the adaptation techniques discussed above is to tailor the system to the specific needs of a user. In order to do this it is necessary to elicit or anticipate the users requirements.
These requirements can be stored in a profile or user model (student models in ITSs) which must be updated to reflect the ongoing requirements of the user. In a similar way, as we have already discussed, student models are used in intelligent tutoring systems in order to guide students towards a better understanding of the teaching material and to tailor the material to the student.
