The aim of navigational adaptation is to assist users by manipulating the navigational aids (links, labels, hot spots) within the system suggesting appropriate directions to take. It is proposed that navigational adaptation can overcome the problem of user disorientation.
Navigational adaptation techniques can be applied both globally and locally. When applied locally the scope of any hypertext searches are locally restricted. A global approach is required if the users goal can be found in many locations and the shortest path to it is required. The scope of a global approach is the whole hypertext system which can be extensive as the WWW.
