
Transformational analogy uses previous solution to problems but makes no use of the method by which the solution generated (known as solution derivation). Derivational analogy makes use of this information.
For example the derivation of the solution above may have considered several alternatives to shipping object x from London to Istanbul. However, for various reasons these options may not have been appropriate, e.g. the object is too large for air transportation.
Derivational analogy would re-examine the options and may not recommend shipping for the new object.
