Title: Computer Mediated
Communication: Investigating Factors
Affecting Communication Patterns
in Activity Based Distance Education
Outline: This research
programme is concerned with investigating
the factors affecting patterns
of communication in threaded discussions
supporting activity based distance
learning. One of the key objectives
is to enable instructors become
aware of social, cognitive, behavioural
and cultural aspects related to
discussions between groups of
students using Virtual Learning
Environments (VLE) asynchronously.
The programme also aims to help
instructors in setting up "thriving"
learning activities and "high-quality"
student group tasks. Previous
work has resulted in the identification
of certain measurable factors
that can be used to distinguish
flourishing discussion threads
from the average communication
in VLE. The main contributions
of the programme are to: (i) identlify
the correlation between factors
affecting communication and the
corresponding task characteristics,
(ii) establish a weighting formula
for classifying and prioritising
the affecting factors for a discussion
thread and (iii) provide guidelines
for the "success criteria"
of learning activities and student
group tasks.

Title: Towards New Learning,
Assessment and Evaluation Strategies
Innovation through the OASIS Virtual
Learning Environment
Outline: The project attempts
to develop and improve assessment
results by providing a methodology
for formative and summative online
assessment refined to level of
single modules. Furthermore, the
project focuses heavily on innovative
uses of the OASIS Virtual Learning
Environment (VLE) that is regarded
as a key enabler for pedagogy
in modules that are taught both
locally and through distance learning.
The project also makes some suggestions
for increasing student successful
progression, mainly derived from
two priorities:
(i) developing and improving assessment
- work which aims to more closely
align assessment practices with
policy and particularly work which
is concerned with formative assessment
and/or looks at ways in which
to work within diversity and (ii)
developing innovative uses of
elearning using OASIS, leading
to the increase of the number
and range of modules which add
to the basic provision in more
innovative and pedagogically useful
ways.

Title: Small-scale Research
Project in Advanced Learning Technologies
Outline: This project is
concerned with the investigation
of how computer-mediated communication
may affect the computer-supported
cooperative learning process in
distance education. For several
years the common practice in distance
learning is to exploit the benefits
of Virtual Learning Environments
(VLE) that offer a variety of
tools for both instructors and
learners. A significant part of
these tools are concerned with
the enhancement of communication
during processes such as content
delivery and assessment (e.g.
discussion boards, email, chat
rooms). The project investigates
the effects of discussion boards
on group student projects with
geographically dispersed members.

Title: Desk Top Study -
The Review and mapping of a defined
set of e-learning development
activity
Outline: This project proposal
attempts a desk top study concerned
with the review and mapping of
a defined set of e-learning development
activity. The aims of this project
are to: (i) provide a good understanding
of current e-Learning technology,
(ii) undertake a critical review
of e-Learning development activities
based on the findings of previous
research in the fields of content
delivery, computer assisted assessment
and evaluation provision through
feedback, (iii) map the identified
e-Learning technology developments
to the JISC e-Learning technical
framework and (iv) explore future
use of e-Learning environments
and suggest a strategy for the
evolution of e-Learning systems.
