The Distributed and Collaborative Technologies (DaCT) group was an informal group based in the Department of Computation, UMIST. Our aim was to provide a mechanism by which research students and their supervisors could:

  • become aware of related work within the department
  • meet staff and students working on related research
  • announce important events
  • present current work and recieve valuable feedback in a low pressure environment

In order to achieve this we organised a weekly lunchtime meeting at which one member would make a short presentation. Often this would be a rehearsal for a more important presentation (for example at a conference). These meetings served the dual purpose of allowing the presenter to receive valuable feedback about their work and it allowed the audience to stay abreast of ongoing work. We also had a mailing list for announcements about forthcoming events and calls for papers.

Membership of the DaCT group was informal and involved no commitment other than an expression of interest. However, all members were encouraged to participate by making a presentation at one of our regular meetings.

I was responsible for the organisation of these weekly events for a period of two years, maintaining the DaCT web site and served as the editor of the DaCT booklet, a collection of abstracts and the corresponding presentations that run for four issues.
