Abstract -------- For decades and perhaps centuries people have been trying to understand how humans think, interpret and respond to stimuli. In order to understand how the human brain perceives and reacts to information, there are a few important and demanding questions that need to be answered. How symbols can be grounded is one such question. By knowing the answer to this question, not only a better model of cognition can be developed but knowledge about human brain function will be furthered. To resolve the SGP, instead of defining a symbol in the form of other ungrounded symbols, the system can ground them in such a way that they independently have meaning without getting help from any external source The proposed methods for my research are based on cell assembly architecture in conjunction with a biological model of neurons known as fatiguing leaky integrate and fire neurons. A brief introduction and history of core methods and technologies used in this research are reviewed. A step by step guide to the symbol grounding problem is evolved and is set as a criteria for reviewing other candidate solutions for symbol grounding problem. Selective models for grounding symbols that have been evolved were reviewed and their shortcomings are looked upon. A list of desired features a system should have in order to ground symbols in a better way is also developed and is used as a guideline for grounding symbols.
