Abstract: Pure Data is a real-time graphical programming environment for audio, video, and graphical processing. It is the third major branch of the family of patcher programming languages known as Max (Max/FTS, ISPW Max, Max/MSP, jMax, etc.) originally developed by Miller Puckette, and has been a free software project for the past several years. Because of its graphical nature and extensive functionalities, Pd is now one of the most successful creative tools amongst media artists. For instance, Pd is often used to create audio/visual performances, interactive multimedia installations and Internet streaming. Despite its popularity, there are several aspects of Pd on which significant improvements can be made. DesireData, therefore aims to implement many of such changes. Client/server separation and a new GUI are two key areas in the project. The former will give greater flexibility as to how Pd can be used, whilst refactoring its source code so future developments can be easily made. the latter will offer a more optimized and effecient user interface to aid user productivity. In short, it will hopefully enhance the everyday experience of the original Pd for both users and developers. This presentation will demonstrate how DesireData works and discuss many of its details.
