TITLE: Hybrid Intelligence - Making Sense of (Big) Data SPEAKER: Kai Xu (Middlesex University) ABSTRACT: Sensemaking is the process of find meaning from information. It is complex and difficult: it involves ETL (Extract, Transform and Load), various computational analysis (such as statistics and machine learning), data visualisation, and finally human interpretation/reasoning and decision making. While there is a rich literature addressing each stage of sensemaking, very few attempts have been made to support the entire process holistically. Also, not enough attention (I think) has been paid to the human role in this process, such as understanding the data and generating hypothesis. In this talk, I will introduce Hybrid Intelligence, which aims to integrate human intelligence with machine intelligence, and how it may address these issues. This will include an overview of a few projects that completed recently and a discussion of remaining research challenges. Dr Kai Xu is an Associate Professor in Data Analytics at the Middlesex University in London, UK. He has over 15 year experience in data visualisation and analytics research in both the academic and industry context. Recently he has been working with the UK government departments and leading defence companies on using Visual Analytics to address the sensemaking challenges they face in (big)data analysis. His work has won a few international data visualisation awards.
